Cachengo, Inc. was founded in April 2009 to address the need for reliably protecting data and making it available to mission critical applications, to users in remote offices or in the wake of a catastrophe such as fire or flood.

While the company is fairly new, the Cachengo team is not new to storage. In fact, many of the advancements in storage over the past two decades such as RAID, storage management and converged block and file have been pioneered by the Cachengo team members. Furthermore, the company has developed storage solutions that are currently sold by some of the top names in the business.

After the economic meltdown of 2008, several members of Cachengo felt it was necessary to change the storage landscape. Other product offerings were suffering from fragmentation while costs were increasing as opposed to decreasing. Rather than jumping into the fray with more niche features, the company’s mission focused on delivering simplicity at an exceptional value.

Small to medium businesses have different needs than large enterprises. Their budgets are significantly less and their IT staffs typically consist of one to a couple of people. And in many cases it’s outsourced from a reseller. Despite this, there are numerous advancements in technology that small businesses can greatly benefit from, which may be out of their grasps.

Let’s suppose Company A has a file server product that makes collaboration easy, and Company B produces backup software that will ensure developers’ workstations are protected. Both represent necessary acquisitions, but either may represent a small business’ annual budget. Still, more costs will be incurred if the business wishes to protect their information assets offsite in the event of a disaster. Now, let’s suppose that same small business needs to ensure that their applications are available in the event of an ISP outage. What then?

With Cachengo, there is no longer a need to purchase and integrate separate components from a multitude of vendors when a single product addresses all of these needs. Many vendors like to talk about reducing TCO (total cost of ownership). Cachengo actually does it.
