Backing up files on your Mac is quite easy and doesn’t require the installation of our agent, unless that is a route you would specifically like to pursue. Using our agent will backup your files into a compressed volume on the Cachengo Director, which will not let you access such files outside of the backup application.
If you wish to backup your files and still access them on the Director, from any other system, then this is the method you should use.
Create a Virtual IT user on your Mac
The first thing you must do is create a Virtual IT administrative account on your Mac. This account will allow the Director to access the folders you wish to have backed up.
- Open your System Preferences, which is located at the top left of your screen under the Apple menu item.
- Once in System Preferences, you’ll want to select Accounts under the System section of the preferences.
- Once in Accounts, you’ll need to click on the lock icon in order to make any changes to the user list.
- This will result in you being prompted to enter your Administrative password. This is the password you provided when you first setup your Mac.
- Once you’ve authenticated yourself and are able to make changes, the plus sign (+) should become dark, which means you may now add a new user. Go ahead and click on the + sign.
- You’ll need to create a new Administrator account for Virtual IT. To do this, select Administrator from the pull-down menu. Then give the account the name Virtual IT. The full name isn’t really that important, if you want to add something more descriptive. What is important, however, is that the Account name is “virtualit” in lower case and without any extra characters. Pick whatever password you’re comfortable with, but our Virtual IT staff will need this to be able to access files for backup.
Export a folder to be backed up
This next step takes whatever folders you wish to have backed up and makes them accessible to the Cachengo Director. In this example, I am going to export the Documents folder under my user.
- The first thing to do is go back to the System Preferences and click on the Sharing icon located under the Internet and Wireless section.
- This will take you into the file sharing preferences. From here, you can select a variety of different types of sharing. But for backup, we specifically need to enable the File Sharing option by clicking on the check box. You may have to click and unlock the panel, like before, by clicking on the lock icon at the bottom left of the panel.
- Now that file sharing has been enabled, we have to add a folder(s) to be exported. This is done by clicking on the + icon underneath the Shared Folders section of the panel.
- Now we need to select our initial folder. In this example, I am going to export my Music library. So I click on the top level folder and then click the Add button to finish my selection.
- At this point, the share is essentially created. But we need to set the proper access control to it. This is done by clicking on the Options button near the center of the panel.
- The Options panel will allow you share your folder through a variety of different protocols such AFP (Apple Filing Protocol), FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or SMB (Windows File Sharing). For our backup scenario, we want the SMB checkbox checked and we also want our user account (Virtual IT) to be checked. This will ensure our administrative account can mount and backup all of the files and directories on the shared folder.
Once the Administrative account and the Exported Directories have been configured, nothing else has to be done. Simply email us at email@example.com with your server name (e.g. Cachengo-104C), located on the top right of your server, your administrative password for the Virtual IT user and let us know if there are any file types or directories you wish to have excluded from your backup job. Also let us know the desired schedule for the backups. By default, the more frequent you backup your data, the more protected you will be.
As a general rule, we only backup changes. So once we’ve created an initial backup job and synchronized everything, only new or modified files will be backed up on subsequent jobs.
